The Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity hosted a workshop on the dynamics of institutions in water resource management. The workshop brought together a diverse group of scholars who study irrigation, groundwater, domestic water use or watershed governance over time varying from hundreds of years in pre-history in the Hohokam to the domestic water use in diverse seasons in Cochabamba, Boliva during one year.

The formal launch of the Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity was held on January 16, 2008. In a brief ceremony at 2:00 pm, in front of Matthews Hall, School of Human Evolution and Social Change Director Sander van der Leeuw, Dean of CLAS Social Sciences Linda Lederman, Vice President for Research and Economic Affairs Rick Shangraw, and Founding Director of CSID Elinor Ostrom gave short speeches after which the audience were invited to visit an open house of the center. In the evening Nobel Laureate Douglass North gave a lecture on the understanding of diverse social orders (limited access and open access societies). You can download an audio recording of Dr. Douglass North's lecture as (MP3 | AIFF) and read more about the launch and the lectures here and here.
